Get comfy as this is a long ride. Sunday was the first of 2 days in Warnemunde, Germany. Our plan for Day 1 was to take the train to Rostock with one particular goal in mind. When we were in Warnemunde in 2021, we took an excursion to Rostock. It included a stop in a restaurant and Linda has been talking about the pretzels ever since. So, that was our target. The train station is a 5 minute walk from the port and navigating the ticket machine was easy. It is a 23 minute ride from Warnemunde to the main station in Rostock.
It was a long walk from the station in Rostock to the center of the city, but the architecture is worth the walk.
We finally made it to the Neuer Markt. It was not a market day.
.

From there, we wandered to the Alstadt.
Here we also saw one of the most unusual sights that we've seen.
Look closely and you'll see that it's a closed McDonalds!
On the lawn at Universitatspl, it was time for family picnics and fun.
It was then time to find our main destination, the Restaurant Hopfenkeller, for beer and pretzels. After a few wrong turns thanks to bad directions from Google Maps, we made it. And disappointment set in. Check out how happy Linda was in 2021:
Today, they had no pretzels! Now check out how disappointed she was by that and by her small beer!
Oh well. We settled for healthy lunches of salad and grilled vegetables instead.
After lunch, we walked back to the train station partly along the old city wall and a nice park.
We enjoyed Rostock. But, we found it interesting that the only graffiti we noticed was in one small area.
We were 2 tired people on that train ride after another 4 hour outing.
Walking back to the ship, there were sand sculptures to see in the port area.
We like the overnights in port. After dinner, we took a stroll outside. And, in the morning, I was able to go ashore for a jog. It was a bit cold and windy!
Day 2 we had an afternoon excursion. In the morning, we went for a walk around Warnemunde. By then, the sun had come out.
Our first visit to Warnemunde was many years ago and we have a lasting memory from that visit. Along the water there are kiosks selling fish. On that first visit, I bought a fish sandwich and we were walking along when a gull swooped down and stole my fish! This time we were sure to protect the sandwich from the gulls.
If you think that I'm kidding, check out the gull lurking above me!
Our afternoon excursion was Mecklenburg Countryside & Narrow-Gauge Railway. The first stop was at the Bad Doberan Minster Church which was built in the 14th century.
Then it was time for the train ride which proved to be fairly uninteresting and poll
uting! The train brought us to the seaside town of Kuhlungsborn where we had a nice walk around including a stop for coffee. There were no pretzels to be found but at least I was able to get a pretzel roll.
The bus ride back to Warnemunde provided views of poppies and an interesting discussion of German history from our guide who happens to be an expat Irishman. Daniel was quite a good guide.
That concluded a good 2 day visit to Warnemunde. With our stop in Germany, the country count is now 9.
This morning, we are at anchor off of Karlskrona, Sweden. We'll explore it later. There was an interesting sight as we sailed in. Check it out and see if you can figure out what it is:
On the train ride, we were initially seated in a car with a couple of groups of loud speakers which was very distracting. They obviously had not read Rule of Civility Number 67:
Detract not from others neither be excessive in commanding.
Peace and blessings,
Linda and Larry
That's a lot of work for 0 pretzels! So disappointing!
