Yesterday was a day at sea with two highlights. First up was yet another bingo win - $192! Next was an earthquake. What, an earthquake at sea??? Well, at about 3:30 pm as we were sailing over relatively calm waters, we felt a few pretty good shakes. A few minutes later, Linda got a notification of a 6.5 earthquake under the Queen Charlotte Sound, exactly where we were sailing. Now I had always heard that, if you were on a ship that sailed over a tsunami, you would never feel it. So, I was skeptical that the two events were related. Then I Googled seismic waves and sure enough it says that seismic waves emerge from the sea floor as sound waves that can strike a ship. I've had a couple of conversations with Captain Leo about this but he remains skeptical. I've assured him that we felt it and I guess he believes me? Here are maps showing the location of the earthquake and the location of the ship at that time.
Okay, enough geeking out, let's move on to Ketchikan. A day or two ago, the forecast was for rain all day in Ketchikan today. When we arrived this morning, it was raining.
But the latest forecast showed a window of no rain mid day. So we took the shuttle into town in quest of salmon chowder. We went to a restaurant that we had eaten at last year - The Alaska Fish House. The salmon chowder and the salmon fish and chips were outstanding.
After lunch, we walked back up to the creek to check out the salmon spawn again. There seemed to be fewer salmon than last week so I guess it's getting late into the spawning season. We did get a good view of a seal.
We'll be leaving Ketchikan soon, heading for another day in Sitka.
I hope that you can tell from the tenor of this posting that our moods have greatly improved from the last entry. It took well over a day to overcome most of the trauma of Saturday. This morning truly was the dawn of a new day. Here's hoping that the good times continue to roll!
Peace and blessings,
Linda and Larry
I'm glad that you processed the trauma and are feeling better!
