Thursday, we were in Klawock, Alaska. It is a new port requiring tenders. I think that they had 6 cruise ship visits this year. The town is very small - 800 people. We opted for the Taste of Klawock & Totem Park excursion and what a terrific excursion it was. We were brought to a forested area along the Klawock River. They had huts set up for us to sit in while we sampled the local seafood.
The tasting started with oysters paired with champagne or a local IPA. Now, I normally am not a fan of oysters, but these were delicious.
Next up were the salmon and halibut tastings paired with California wine. I guess that global warming still has not made it warm enough to grow grapes in Alaska!
The setting by the river was lovely and the rain held off while we were there.
After that, we were taken to the Totem Park where a young man led us around and described the meaning of the totems.
The excursion was excellent and, since there didn't seem much else to do in Klawock, well worth it. And it was good to see that this mostly native community was benefitting from cruise ship visits.
On another culinary note, the Executive Chef on board, Gabriele, is a chef that we had sailed with before when he was the chef in Toscana, the Italian restaurant. We always enjoyed his special pastas of the day. So, a couple of days ago, he asked us what type of pasta dish we wanted the next time we were in Toscana and he would make it. We agreed on a ravioli stuffed with pumpkin in a butter sage sauce. It was amazing!
After Linda returned to the ship, I went for a walk along the waterfront.
Eventually I made my way to the Rushbrook trail head.
I love that rainforest!
