The Grandeur of Grundarfjordur

Yes, the grandeur of Grundarfjordur - say that fast three times!  Today, Monday, was our first port of call, the village of Grundarfjordur.  Its population is just under 900.  Think about it - our ship with its 680 guests almost doubles the size of the village.  But wait, there is also a Princess ship here with its over 3600 guests!  Anyway, it's quite a small place with some charm as you will see.  The weather was cool and cloudy - 50 degrees F but no rain.

The nice thing about life in the slow lane is we had a leisurely morning before heading off of the ship.  It was a short walk to town and we headed to the viewpoint of the iconic Kirkjufell Mountain.

In the afternoon, I took an almost 2 hour walk while Linda had a well deserved nap.  First, I headed through the village.

I then took a dirt path that went above the village and got to a view of a small waterfall.

I also got to see some Icelandic horses in the distance.

When I came down from the dirt road to the main road, my intent was to walk back to the ship.  But I saw some people walking further out on the road so I decided to see what there was to see.  What there was to see was the Gundarfoss waterfall.  I walked a distance up the path until I got a good view.  I could have walked further and gotten closer but decided that I had enough and headed back to the ship.

I'd say that the stop in Grundarfjordur was worthwhile.  It was small but has a lot of the things you come to Iceland to see - mountains, waterfalls, and horses.

Tomorrow we will be in Isafjordur.  I think that it will be our third time visiting there.

Peace and blessings,

Linda and Larry

  3. In the US, that's a $12,000 bounce pillow. Times must be good in Iceland!
