The Fabulous Fjord of Nuuk

When I last posted, I told you that we were waiting for the fog to lift so we could proceed into the  Nuuk Fjord.  As we sat in the fog, we got this interesting rainbow-like arc in front of the ship.

Well, finally, around noon, the captain announced that the fog had lifted over Nuuk but he wasn't sure about the fjord.  He said that we would proceed into the fjord and hope for the best.  The fog remained.  Linda and I waited a bit then decided to go to lunch.  When we got to the dining room, Linda asked me to go get something from our room.  When I walked in, I was greeted by this:

So we went back up to the room and ordered room service for lunch.  Of course, the fog rolled back in.  The ship continued on and before too long, we completely cleared the fog bank and were treated to magnificent views all afternoon.  I won't post all of the pics I took but give you a good sample.

As we got deeper into the fjord, the amount of ice we encountered increased.

I liked this one with its pet dog lying in front of it!

At one point, the ship got quite close to an iceberg but thankfully, no Titanic!

The plan was to go to the glacier at the head of the fjord.  However, that part of the fjord was blocked by ice.

So, instead, the captain took us up another arm of the fjord to  a view of the village of Kapisillit, population 52.  The village is only accessible by boat and we did see the Nuuk Water Taxi earlier.

After turning around,  the cruise back down the fjord continued to be picturesque.

This morning we are anchored off of the town of Paamiut, Greenland.  When we arrived, we had a decent view of the town.

We went to breakfast in the dining room, were seated at a window in the back and, right there, was a huge iceberg.  We're guessing that it was well over 50 feet in length.  It was so close to the ship but they quickly moved the ship to put some distance between us.  I wasn't quick enough to get a good close shot.

As we ate breakfast, the fog rolled in and that's the current situation.  The sound of the ship's fog horn is a constant reminder.

We'll see what happens later.  But, given that we've been here once before, and given that it's a tender ride in, and given that the current temperature is 39 degrees F, and given that the predicted high will be 40 degrees, we may just stay on the ship.

After today, we have 3 days at sea before we return to Torshavn so it may be a while before my next post.  In the meantime,

Peace and blessings,
Linda and Larry
