It's Isafjordur, Again

Thursday was our second stop on this cruise in Isafjordur, fourth time there overall.  For the first time, we took a ship's excursion there called Fjords & Flowers.  The excursion started with a bus ride to Flateyri Village on the Onundarfjordur.  To get there, we drove through a 7 km long tunnel.  For much of the tunnel, it's one lane and the traffic going in our direction had to use turnouts when other vehicles approached.

It was then a ride along the Fjord until we arrived at the church in Flateyri.  In the church, we were treated to music by a young local musician.

Then we walked along the main street to The Old Bookstore in Flateyri.  I could not resist buying a novel about volcanoes by an Icelandic author (which has been translated into English).  It was nice to see a rainbow crosswalk just like we have at home in Long Beach.

From there, we walked to the Gunnukaffi Cafe for coffee and snacks.

Then it was back to the bus to drive to Nupur and the Skrudur botanical garden, the oldest one in Iceland.

The garden was fairly small with an interesting collection of plants.  But the highlight was seeing Iceland's smallest waterfall!😉

It was then a scenic drive back through the tunnel and to the port.

As we approached the pier, our guide (who was excellent) pointed out the local brewery.  So we walked back to sample the beer brewed with pure artesian water that flows under the tunnel.  Quite good.  Apparently the cat enjoyed it but had drank too much and passed out on the patio!

The day was mostly overcast with just a bit of drizzle at one point.  The excursion was really good and it was nice to explore other parts of the Isafjordur region.  This was our last stop in Iceland.  Just a note - while the Icelandic language is a very difficult one, we were impressed that everyone we encountered spoke English and spoke it very well.

Today we are at sea for the first of 2 days until we reach Greenland.

Peace and blessings,
Linda and Larry
