Thursday, after a leisurely day at sea, was our day in Charleston, South Carolina. I had been following the weather forecast for a few days before and it consistently called for a day of rain. Fortunately, as we got closer, the forecast called for a stop to the rain in mid-afternoon. Sure enough, when we arrived in the morning it was raining.
At that point, we thought we might not even go ashore if the rain persisted. It would have been disappointing to not go for lunch at Fleet Landing, where we had eaten some years ago, but that disappointment was tempered by the fact that their Shrimp and Grits was made with ham and andouille sausage which we no longer eat. So no Fleet Landing was okay.
While on board, we were entertained by pelicans and dolphins which played by the ship all day.
So lunch was on board and, when the rain finally ended at about 3:30, we hit the town. We wound up doing our own historic walking tour through Charleston for 2 hours. We first walked along Concord Street with its many beautiful, historic buildings to see including Rainbow Row.
We walked past the remnants of the old city bastion before coming to the waterfront and White Point Garden with its lovely Southern Live Oak trees and which still contains "Confederate Defenders" monuments.
From the garden, we walked back into town along Meeting Street - more interesting, more beautiful buildings.
As we approached the center of town, we came to the city hall where they were preparing for a demonstration in support of Israel.
Continuing on, we passed the Circular Congregational Church which had a sign that did not fit our image of South Carolina. It seemed more fitting of our neighborhood in Long Beach!
And finally, we stumbled upon the Charleston City Market and you know that we love the markets.
Now it's one more sea day before we get to Miami.
Peace and blessings,
Linda and Larry
