Happy Freedom Day From Lagos

We are nearing the end of our third full day in Lagos and thoroughly enjoy our time here.  I said that we would indulge in the slow life, but my step count has increased daily - 17000+ on Sunday, 20000+ on Monday and 22000+ so far today.  Let's just call it slow walking.

Our first outing on Monday morning took us to the Municipal Market which was a disappointment.  It was small and only a couple of fish vendors were there, maybe because it was a Monday.

Our main goal for the day was to walk the boardwalk that went along the beaches.  The boardwalk is quite new, I believe only a year or two old.  In many places you can still see the chalk lines from the carpenters.

The weather was ideal (as it has been for our stay here so far) and the walk was pleasant.  We probably walked out about 1-1/2 miles to Meia Praia - and 1-1/2 miles back, of course.

On our return to town, the bridge over the estuary was open for a boat, delaying our walk to the tapas restaurant for lunch.

I enjoyed my mussels and Linda enjoyed her prawns, once she got past the heads!

Our stroll back to the apartment took us past the ubiquitous gift shops.  We do wonder why boomerangs are a thing here????

After our late lunch we decided that a wine and cheese dinner on the balcony would work perfectly.  So we hit up the Pingo Doce (supermarket) and enjoyed more of the slow life.

The Pingo Doce 2 Euro white Duoro wine beats Trader Joe's 2 Buck Chuck hands down!

Today, Tuesday, is a holiday in Portugal - Freedom Day, celebrating the Carnation Revolution when soldiers took to the streets with flowers poking out of their firearms in opposition to the authoritarian government.  This led to the downfall of the government and reestablished democracy in Portugal.  This morning in Lagos, there was a celebration with a marching band, the raising of the flag, and the release of pigeons.  Why pigeons and not doves?  Don't ask me!

When the speeches in Portuguese began, we'd had enough of the pomp and circumstance, and left.  Last year we were in Lyon, France for Bastille Day.  It seems our timing is always good.

Our next adventure was a walk to Ponta da Piedade.  It was amazing, so amazing that it warrants a blog post all its own.  I'll just leave you with a tease here:

Stay tuned for the full post later.

Peace and blessings,
Linda and Larry
