Today, Saturday, we are in Townsville QLD. Getting right to the bottom line, it is hot and humid which makes it tough for us SoCal wimps. And to make it worse, I made the strategic mistake of jogging on the ship's fitness track as we were sailing in. That really beat me up.
After considering the options, we decided to just walk shoreside along the strand. The shuttle bus from the ship left us in town and we walked about 15 minutes to get to the strand. Did I mention that it was very hot and humid? Fortunately, by the strand, there was a bit of a breeze and some shady spots which made it more tolerable.
Yes, Linda was hot!
We passed a very tempting water playground where it looked like many of the Townsville kids were having a great time.
As we were enjoying our drinks, we noticed a taxi stand across the street. We figured we'd take a taxi back to the ship. But, by the time we were ready to go, no taxis were in sight. So, we thought that the breeze would be favorable and we'd just tough it out. Did I mention that it was extremely hot and humid? On the way back we fought our way up a steep hill and noted some interesting things - there are many murals, a seemingly out of place Christmas tree, a waterfall that seemed to come right through a residential area, and motorized scooters with helmets provided.
Ultimately, we made it back to the shuttle bus stop and the ship without totally wilting.
Tomorrow we will be Cairns. It will be our third visit there and I am really excited about going back. I'll leave you hanging there and explain everything in the next entry.
Though it was a tough day, I feel satisfied with the effort. Which brings me to another quote from Emma Donoghue's book Haven - "If you're spared to reach my age, you'll find you're glad of even the hard hours.".
