Helsinki

After a wonderful day of smooth sailing (okay, perhaps the swell was up to 3 inches at times) complete with wine tasting, massage, and the Captain's cocktail reception, we arrived in Helsinki this morning.  Unlike the 2 days of warm, sunny weather, the skies were overcast and then the fog rolled in.

We opted to take a ship's excursion today - a walking tour of Helsinki.  We were here 16 years ago but I didn't really remember much of it.  The tour was excellent with a well informed guide, Rebecca.  The first stop was at a large square that was mostly empty of people.  Rebecca said that they have moved the main gathering square to another location.

We then walked past the Finnish theater (there are two theaters, one Finnish and the other Swedish since both are official languages of Finland) and on to the train station.
Inside the train station was the most ornate Burger King in the world!

The tour continued to the new square with its more modern theater and library.  All along we saw lots of interesting architecture.  And, of course, there was a stop for coffee and a local pastry.
We then made our way back to the waterfront where we saw many geese heading south for the winter.

The last stop was at a park which has a statue dedicated to the Finnish composer Sibelius.

After the tour, we stayed in the city for a bit to check out the market.  Linda remembered this well since she purchased much loved oven mitts there last time.  Sadly, there were no good oven mitts, or much of anything good to buy this time.
We returned to the ship for a relaxing afternoon watching the fog from our suite.  Tomorrow it's Tallinn.

Peace and blessings,
Linda and Larry
