ATW - Day 25

Today we are in Vava'u, Tonga and that is no April Fool's Day joke.

The sail in was beautiful as we cruised through the archipelago.

We opted for the Natural & Historic Sites excursion. It was a tender ride into the port.

The excursion covered a good deal of the island and had 6 stops.  The first stop was at Pouono Park which was a monument to the king and the enactment of the first code of law in Tonga.  Unfortunately, someone forgot to unlock the gate so we saw it from the outside.

Next up was the Mt. Talau Lookout.  To get to the lookout we climbed 181 uneven steps.  The view was worth it.

Then it was the 'Utula'aina Lookout where we had good views and a snack of local fruit.

Then we visited the St. Joseph's Cathedral.  It was much plainer than others we have visited.  The views were nice.

The fifth stop was at the Veimumuni Cave.  There is a fresh water swimming hole in the cave.  We opted to play it safe and not climb in.

More interesting at that spot was the adjacent cemetery.

One of the grave markers was quite touching.

The final stop was quite disappointing - the 'Utungake Vanilla Plantation.  The only thing that made it a plantation was the few vanilla plants growing there.

The tour was good in that it allowed us to visit many sights on the island.  Our guide was nice but not the best.

I think that they get very few cruise ships into this port so the guides are not very professional.  She read a lot from a script.  It was still worth doing.

Tomorrow is a sea day before we arrive in Suva, Fiji.

Peace and blessings,
Linda and Larry
