After spending 2 nice days in Aventura visiting Linda's cousin (which involved a lot of good eating), we drove up to St. Marys, Georgia. Our reason for stopping there was to visit Annie Copps, a former chef instructor on Oceania and a good friend. Unfortunately, Annie's 91 year old mother took a fall and needed hip replacement surgery so we were unable to meet up with Annie. We made the best of our 2 night stay in the cute town of St. Marys. It started with a nice dinner at one of the seafood restaurants in town, Seagles.
On Wednesday morning we explored the town itself. We first walked along the waterfront.
We then wandered through town, past the cemetery as we searched for the St. Marys History Walk.
We finally found the history walk, which was a short loop with signs giving the entire history of the town. Very interesting.
Of course, there was time for a coffee break!
In the afternoon, we went to the Crooked River State Park and did some hiking. It was a nice area but we were a bit disappointed in the lack of wildlife sightings. At least we avoided the snakes and the alligators!
People say that the thing to do in St. Marys is to go to Cumberland Island. But, when we saw that you had to book times on the ferry, we decided that we prefer having the flexibility to explore on our own. I guess that's the reason that we prefer not to do excursions when we are cruising. We were very satisfied with the way the day turned out.
In the evening we had an even better seafood dinner at Locals Dockside. The crab cakes and trigger fish were really good. But the highlight was the fried pickles accompanied by a Georgia Peach 75 cocktail.
Life just doesn't get better than that.
On our way to Savannah, we stopped at St. Simons Island. We had a nice walk around and more crab cakes for lunch.

Fried pickles sound delicious. :)
