Friday was our second day in Doha. We booked a Get Your Guide tour that took us out of Doha to the northern part of Qatar. We did drive through the central part of Doha and many of the modern high rises.
We were soon out of the city, passing by some stadiums as we entered the desert. city! One of the stadiums was built for the World Cup in 2022. In addition to the stadium, they also built Lusail City.
Our first stop was at the Al Khor harbor with its many fishing boats.
The next stop was at the Al Thakira Mangroves Forest, also known as the Purple Island. It is called that because people formerly extracted purple dye from the sea shells.
Then we made our way further north to the Zubara Fort and the abandoned village of Al Jumail. The fort was built in 1938 as a Coast Guard station.
The village of Al Jumail which was a fishing and pearling village with a population of about 10,000 people. It was founded in the mid-nineteenth century and abandoned in the mid-twentieth century as people moved inland.
That completed our stops on the excursion. It was a good excursion but not one of the best. It did give us exposure to Qatar outside of the big city of Doha. We did have an interesting discussion with our guide Arum. We asked him about the expressions of love and respect for the king and whether it was possible to speak poorly of him. His answer was a clear no. Another of those riddles about life in Qatar and the Middle East which I probably will discuss in later posts.
As we sailed away from Doha, we got another lovely nighttime view.
Peace and blessings,
Linda and Larry
