All Roads Lead to Rhodes

Today, Saturday, is the first of our eight consecutive sea days.  With many activities on board, I will somehow find time to catch up on the last two ports we visited - Rhodes and Cyprus.  Let's start with Rhodes.

We took an excursion to Ancient Lindos, an acropolis with yet another temple to Athena.  The site was originally built by Greeks around 300 BCE and later occupied by Romans, Byzantines, Knights of St. John, and the Ottomans.  Leaving the port, with it's own ruins, we were bussed to the city of Lindos where we began our 200 step climb up to the acropolis.

Our guide, who was excellent, led us through the town past the various ruins until, ultimately, we reached the temple.  The ruins and the views along the way were well worth the climb.

Of course, the highlight was the Athena temple and the two Athenas at the top.

After visiting the site, we walked back down through the town where we stopped for a coffee at the Captain's House which was built in 1642.

It was another good outing.  As I said, our guide was excellent, communicating both the history and insights into the culture of Rhodes.  After returning to the port, we walked around the city of Rhodes with it's old walls.  Along the way, i could not resist buying a bottle of the local wine.  I haven't tried it yet - I'll let you know.

I'll wrap this blog entry up and save Cyprus for the next entry.  I'll just say now that it was a special day that deserves its own entry.

Peace and blessings,

Linda and Larry
