Wednesday we were docked in Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala.
We booked a non-ship's excursion to Antigua, about a 1-1/2 hour drive inland from the port. The excursion started smoothly as we drove past interesting rock formations and volcanoes in the distance.
Then things got interesting, if that's the right word. About 45 minutes out, a hose broke on our bus and there we were stuck on the side of the road.
They quickly called for a replacement, but it took about an hour for it to arrive. Fortunately, we had plenty of time to complete the excursion before the ship sailed so we carried on to Antigua. Our first stop was at the Santo Domingo Convent, now the site of ruins and a nice hotel.
We then were taken into the center of Antigua with its narrow streets and colorful old buildings.
Then came lunch where, being pescatarians, we missed out on the traditional Guatemalan dishes of chicken and pork. Nice grilled vegetables and guacamole though. Oh, the price we pay for our dietary choices!
After lunch, we walked past the square and visited the cathedral. All through the city we were hounded by Mayan folks peddling their wares.
And then came the highlight of every excursion. In this case it was a visit to the reputed Mayan Museum which, in fact, turned out to be a jade sales room. At least they did have some interesting jade artifacts on display. And, I am sure, you can't imagine how much money we dropped there. (Hint - something less than 1 Quetzal).
Thankfully, the ride back to the port was smooth and relatively quick. Except for the hiccup with the bus, the tour was fine and our guide was very good.
Today, Thursday, is the first of 2 days at sea as we have had a change in itinerary. After Acapulco was slammed by Otis, our call there on Friday was canceled and we are going to Puerto Vallarta on Saturday instead. Not a bad trade off.
Peace, blessings, and crookedness,
Linda and Larry
