Today, Thursday, we are in Maloy, Norway and I passed up on the fish soup. I'll explain later.
The sail into Maloy was, of course, beautiful. I've come to conclude that everywhere in Norway is beautiful.
Our plan for the day was to hike up to Mt. Veten and possibly Skramsvatnet Lake. Google Maps led us on a zigzag path up the streets of Maloy to the Mt. Veten trailhead.
When we arrived at the trailhead, it seemed to be impossibly steep and rocky. I presume that there is a better access point to the trail, but we didn't find it.
So, it was time for plan B - to the lake. We had to go part of the way back down the streets and then back up including a very steep climb at the end. But we were rewarded for our effort.
The only downside was that Linda was quite disappointed that swimming was forbiden.
After a snack break, we walked around the lake to the other end. We could not walk all around the lake because the path was closed on the other side.
We were hoping to see some wildlife on our hike and were lucky enough to spot this crocodile in the lake:
We made our way back, stopping for a quick workout before descending back into town. We were lucky enough to even have some sun appear.
Once back in town, we headed for the waterside restaurant reputed to have the best fish and chips perhaps in the world. Now for the fish soup story. We noticed that there was also fish soup on the menu. I was torn - do have Norwegian Fish Soup, round 4 or the supposed excellent fish and chips. Well, I ultimately decided on the fish and chips and was not sorry. The fish and chips was indeed good (but maybe not the best I've ever had). And a woman seated near us had the fish soup which looked pretty sorry and she only ate about a third of it. Good decision!
After lunch we walked through town back to the ship. We passed several murals along the way which were recently painted to improve some of the drab buildings that were built in the 50's to replace the original wooden buildings that were destroyed in the war.
So, that's it for Maloy - it was a pleasant stop which has only recently begun to welcome cruise ships. Talking to one of the shop owners, he said that this has been the worst summer ever with much rain so I guess we were lucky to just have clouds. He also said that the forecast is for northern lights tomorrow night so pray for clear skies!
Peace and blessings,
Beautiful photos! That fish looks huge!
